SDS and Mental Health

Access to self-directed support for people who have mental health problems

People with mental health problems have a low take up of Direct Payments relative to other groups: Self-directed Support, Direct Payments, Scotland (2011). By the end of 2011 Moray Council had almost completed their SDS pilot without engaging people with mental health problems. They wanted to explore how SDS might work for this group of people.

Given that IRISS Evidence Explorers identified barriers and challenges to take up but also benefits of self-directed support for people with mental health problems, we felt it important to focus on why access is difficult for this group of people and how these barriers can be overcome.

We worked with a team of people who use and deliver mental health services in Moray to explore, co-design and deliver practical solutions and tools to support this aspiration.
